M31 Andromeda Galaxy

The Andromeda Galaxy is a spiral galaxy approximately 2.5 million light-years from Earth in the Andromeda constellation. Also known as Messier 31, M31, or NGC 224, it is often referred to as the Great Andromeda Nebula in older texts. M31 is the nearest spiral galaxy to our Milky Way galaxy, but not the nearest galaxy overall. It gets its name from the area of the sky in which it appears, the constellation of Andromeda, which was named like the mythological princess Andromeda. The Andromeda Galaxy is the largest galaxy of the Local Group, which also contains the Milky Way, the Triangulum Galaxy, and about 30 other smaller galaxies.

La Galassia di Andromeda è una galassia a spirale circa 2,5 milioni di anni luce dalla Terra nella costellazione di Andromeda. Conosciuta anche come Messier 31, M31, o NGC 224, è spesso indicata come la Grande Nebulosa di Andromeda. E' la galassia a spirale più vicina alla nostra Via Lattea, ma non la galassia più vicina generale. Prende il nome dalla zona del cielo in cui appare, la costellazione di Andromeda, in riferimento alla principessa mitologica Andromeda. La Galassia di Andromeda è la galassia più grande del Gruppo Locale, che contiene anche la Via Lattea, la Galassia del Triangolo, e circa 30 altre galassie più piccole.
